No, you do not. You can configure your windows and/or doors in any way that suits your ideas following our advice. While there are some limitations (which our product consultants will be happy to address during the free in-home consultation), they are usually too subtle to affect your grand plan. The most straightforward change usually done by Canadian Quality customers is the configuration and sides of opening windows and/or doors. A more drastic change would be changing the size of windows and/or doors. The most drastic change is creating new windows and doors where they previously did not exist.

You do not have to, although if your budget allows, we would recommend replacing everything at the same time just for noticing the improvement compared to your old windows and doors. You also minimize the construction duration as everything will be complete within a day. For budget considerations we also offer flexible financing options.

Yes, new construction grade windows are generally available in some of the hardware stores. They tend to be of lower quality compared to that provided by Canadian Quality Windows, and therefore their product life is much shorter (you will have to replace them again much sooner). As to the installation, it is a process that demands knowledge, but if you are confident, you can always do it yourself. There are many reasons for any window to get condensation with multiple factors affecting its severity. The pure physics of it tells us that when warm, moist air cools down after meeting with a cooler window surface, its ability to hold moisture reduces and it releases water vapour as droplets on the glass. No. There is no such thing as a standard window. At Canadian Quality Windows we measure your windows twice before custom-making them to fit your house openings.
There are some tell-tale signs that your windows may need to be replaced such as: if you see freezing on the windows during winter time; if you feel cold draft when you are next to a window; if you have fog or any colour between your glass panes; fading on your carpet or furniture where the sun rays hit through the window; moisture; difficulty opening or closing windows; any rotting, pealing, or moulding. In general, you can also take the age of windows into account. The technologies develop fast and windows today are not the same as they were 10-15 years ago.
Canadian Quality windows are easy in care: for cleaning just wipe the frames with a soft cloth with warm water and feel free to use mild cleaning solutions for the glass. When closing Casement or Awning windows, make sure that the lock latch is in the fully open position at the time of closing, and then always firmly lock it in place when the window is closed.

According to Ontario Building Code every bedroom-level floor without a direct exterior door must have at least one window which can allow for an easy escape to outside in case of an emergency (also called “Egress” window). There are specific regulations to the size of the opening and the ease of operation for a window to be considered Egress. If the window is below grade, there are also requirements to window well clearance. In every other regard an Egress window is just like other windows and can be customized to your preference without negating the above requirements.
Low-E glass is glass with a very thin, invisible (for most of the grades) permanent coating. It is the newest technology in fenestration allowing for effective temperature control both in high and low outside temperatures. It reflects heat back into the interior during cold outside temperatures and prevents heat from entering into the interior during hot outside temperatures, as well as prevents harmful UV rays from penetrating the space. There are different grades of Low-E coating and moving to the higher grades of Low-E you may notice a very slight tint in the glass. Regular Low-E levels are completely invisible. The number of “panes” refers to the number of glass layers in the window. Canadian Quality Windows offers some of the most energy efficient solutions in triple pane option. The additional benefit is better sound isolation than that of a double-pane windows.
Argon is a harmless, odourless, inert gas which heavier than air. Used to fill the space between glass panes, it acts as an effective insulator by minimizing heat transfer and reducing convection between the panes. This helps maintain a window surface temperature closer to that of your indoor environment, which in turn lowers the chance of condensation forming. The result is improved thermal performance and increased energy efficiency for your home.
SHGC stands for Sun Heat Gain Coefficient and is a measure of how much solar radiation passes through a window, door, or skylight, and becomes heat inside a building. The SHGC includes both direct solar transmission and indirect solar gain. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1, where lower numbers mean less heat gain. Depending on the climate in which the windows or doors are installed, higher or lower number may be preferable.
U-value (also called thermal transmittance) measures how well a building element, such as a window, door, or wall, conducts heat. It represents the rate of heat transfer through the material — in other words, how much heat is lost. A lower U-value means better insulation and higher energy efficiency, as less heat escapes through the material. For those of you technically inclined, U-value is measured in Watts (heat flow) per one square meter of a material for each degree of temperature difference and its units are W/m2*K.
R-Value (also called thermal resistance) measures how well a building element resists heat flow and is inversely related to U-Value.
Bay windows typically have three panels arranged at sharper angles than in Bow windows, creating a more angular view. Bow windows which have four or more panels, sport gentler curve to arrive at rounded, more gradual appearance. There is really no “average” when it comes to doors due to the multitude of materials, sizes, options, colours, and configurations. The most basic standard doors can cost as low as CAD $950, and with different options and sizes the most expensive doors can cost well over ten thousand dollars. However, similar to choosing a wine, more expensive will not necessarily mean better for you. The main difference is between Sliding Doors and French Doors (Garden Doors are very similar to the latter). Sliding Doors have two or more panels, which slide left-to-right or right-to-left on rollers with at least one panel staying fixed. They are mostly comprised of the glass units and provide great wide views and exceptional amounts of light. French Doors swing (usually) out on hinges and provide a more classic look, but you compromise a little on the amount of view and light. Garden Doors are very similar to French doors with a screen to protect from insects.

While it does vary depending on the material, age, and manufacturer, a typical door should not require a lot of maintenance. Regular lubrication of hinges and perhaps lock is what most doors require.

While it may depend on particular season and your timing preferences, as a rule our Product Consultant will be able to visit your property within several days from the request. Please bear in mind that our products are custom made for your openings, which inevitably takes time, and we encourage you to have a consultation earlier rather than later for better, stress-free project planning.
Canadian Quality Windows & Doors installs windows and doors all year round. There are, of course, additional measures that we take in the winter months, such as monitoring the weather and actively rescheduling any installations where inclement weather may be a possibility, or using certain materials more fitting for lower temperature installations. We do not install during heavy rain, snow, or strong winds. You should not expect your home to be frozen during an installation even if the temperatures are low because as soon as an old window is taken out, the new one quickly takes its place with minimum uncontrolled opening.
A Retrofit installation is less invasive and installers leave your existing trim and jamb extension (complete interior of the window) in place and only change the window itself to the new one from the outside with a new outside finish and sealing. Full Frame replacement, on the other hand, implies removing the window entirely with all its interior and exterior components and replacing everything with new products.
Most of our installations last one day (typically starting between 8am.-10am. in the morning and done before the end of the day). Smaller projects may start later in the day. The installation time will depend on the quantity and complexity of work, and we will be sure to inform you about the expected duration when scheduling it.
Moving furniture or any other obstacles to access your windows and/or doors during the replacement is not a part of the service commitment we offer, and should be arranged by the homeowners beforehand. Our crews will cover your floors for cleaner process where the replacement takes place.

At Canadian Quality Windows we like to keep you informed through the process and you shall receive notifications about the main stages of the process. In one of the communications we shall list the steps to prepare for the installation, which typically include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring someone is present at the property to allow Canadian Quality Crew to access the residence, and having the decision-maker present at the conclusion of the installation for inspection
  • Moving furniture five feet away from the windows and doors to be replaced
  • Removing and additional objects around or attached to your windows
  • Making sure the driveway has a space for the installation truck to park (where possible)
  • Arranging for the alarm company to reconnect the sensors after the installation
Canadian Quality Crew will put all possible measures in place to leave the space as clean as possible: we will drape the floors for protection and may also drape any immovable non-obstructing objects nearby. We will also remove all the debris after the installation is complete. Please bear in mind that, just like with any significant construction project, some level of dust is inevitable and you may find other surfaces in need of a light cleaning.
